This article provides a generalization of the classical Fourier transform to the slice monogenic setting. The slice Fourier transform is introduced through the construction of its kernel function using the Mehler formula. Eigenfunctions for the transform are shown to be Clifford-Hermite functions as defined and studied by \textit{L. Cnudde} et al. [Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 9, No. 5, 1065--1087 (2015; Zbl 1322.30017)]. A verification of the action of the inverse is performed, along with other basic properties of the transform. The latter part of the paper provides two different approaches to an associated convolution operator: one is a generalization using the Mustard convolution [\textit{D. Mustard}, J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. B 40, No. 2, 257--265 (1998; Zbl 1055.42500)] while in the second one, the translation operator in the integrand of the classical convolution is generalized as in [\textit{F. Brackx} et al., J. Math. Imaging Vis. 26, No. 1--2, 5--18 (2006; Zbl 1122.42016)]. The connection between these two convolution operators is included.
