In this paper, the authors study the symmetry properties of the least energy positive or nodal solutions of the semilinear elliptic problem \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta u+a(x)u=g(x,u) & \text{ in }\Omega,\\ u=0 & \text{ on } \partial \Omega.\\ \end{cases} \] The proof is based on symmetrizations in the spirit of \textit{T. Bartsch}, \textit{T. Weth} and \textit{M. Willem} [J. Anal. Math. 96, 1--18 (2005; Zbl 1206.35086)], together with a strong maximum principle and an intermediate value property for quasi-continuous functions.
