For the theory of automorphic forms over global fields of positive characteristic an important tool is the notion of shtuka introduces by Drinfeld. A shtuka is a vector bundle over a curve whose Frobenius-transform is a modification of prescribed type. By allowing more of these types than in the original case one obtains generalised shtukas. Unfortunately, their moduli space is not compact. To remedy this one can replace the general linear group by a twist, that is by the multiplicative group of a central division-algebra. This corresponds to shtukas with an action of a maximal order. As over number fields one obtains a compact space, one expects the corresponding moduli space to be compact as well. However, this is not the case. The paper under review gives a precise condition (using local invariants of the division algebra and invariants of the modification) when this happens.
