The author gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a nonassociative algebra A to have a power-associative, alternative or Jordan duplicate algebra D(A). Moreover, he characterizes algebras A for which D(A) is associative or strictly 4-associative and also studies the conditions under which D(A)/V and A are isomorphic (V is the associator-ideal). Note that similar results, in a slightly different setting, can be found in the reviewer's study [Duplication of algebras III, Indag. Math., New Ser. 1, No.3, 265-279 (1990; Zbl 0712.17001)].
