Let S be a symmetric group of finite degree, G be a regular subgroup of S, and X be a subgroup of S which properly contains G. The author investigates conditions under which the normalizer \(N_ X(G)\) properly contains G. The main theorem states that \(N_ X(G)\neq G\) in the case that G is a nilpotent Hall subgroup of X and G does not contain a section of the type \(Z_ p wr Z_ p\) for any prime p. The author points out that this latter condition cannot be omitted since \(S_ 8\) contains a simple subgroup X of order 168 which has a regular self-normalizing subgroup G isomorphic to \(Z_ 2 wr Z_ 2\). The main theorem generalizes results of \textit{P. Bhattacharya} [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 25, 81-84 (1982; Zbl 0468.20005)] and \textit{P. Bhattacharya} and \textit{N. Mukherjee} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 33, 253-257 (1984; see the preceding review Zbl 0683.20006)].
