The operators \[ L_ n\bigl(f(t);x\bigr)=\sum^ n_{k=0} P_{n,k}(x) f\left({k\over n-k+1}\right)\qquad (x\geq 0,\;n\in N) \] with \(P_{n,k}(x)={n\choose k} x^ k(1+x)^{-n}\) were introduced by \textit{G. Bleimann}, \textit{P. L. Butzer} and \textit{L. Hahn} [Indagationes Math. 42, 255-262 (1980; Zbl 0437.41021)]. These operators are defined on \(C[0,\infty)\), the space of continuous functions on the unbounded interval \([0,\infty)\) and have the property that they converge to \(f\) uniformly on any finite interval \([a,b]\) contained in \([0,\infty)\) provided \(f\) is bounded and continuous on \([0,\infty)\). In this paper we obtain various saturation theorems for the operators \((L_ n)\). Similar studies for the Bernstein-type operators have been carried out by several authors such as Lorentz, Ditzian and May, Totik. In section 2 of this paper we prove some auxiliary results which are needed in the sequel. A local saturation theorem for the operators \((L_ n)\) is obtained in section 3 making use of the parabola technique of de Vore. We also determine in section 3 the function class \[ \biggl\{f\in\bigl(C[0,\infty)| x^ A\bigr): \| L_ n f- f\|_ A=O(1)n^{-1}\biggr\}, \] where \(\| f\|:=\sup_{0\leq t<\infty}{| f(t)|\over (1+t)^ A}\).
