Let \((X,d)\) be a metric space. A mapping \(f:X\to X\) is called an asymptotic contraction [see \textit{W.\,A.\thinspace Kirk}, J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 277, No.\,2, 645--650 (2003; Zbl 1022.47036)] with moduli \(\Phi,\Phi_n:[0,\infty)\rightarrow [0,\infty)\) if \(\Phi,\,\Phi_n\) are continuous, \(\Phi(s)<s\) for \(s>0\) and for all \(x,y \in X\), \[ d(f^n(x),f^n(y))\leq \Phi_n(d(x,y)), \] and, moreover, \(\Phi_n \to \Phi\) uniformly on the range of \(d\). The author of the present paper extends the concept of asymptotic contraction given above and its extension from [\textit{P.\,Gerhardy}, J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 316, No.\,1, 339--345 (2006; Zbl 1094.47050)] and obtains an explicit rate of convergence for asymptotic contractions in the largest sense. Finally, some large classes of asymptotic contractions on compact metric spaces are also presented.
