An algebraic multigrid method for higher-order finite element discretizations (Q2642941): Difference between revisions

The authors present an algebraic multigrid method for the solution of finite-element problems for second-order linear elliptic equations on domains in the plane with Lagrangian quadratic and cubic basis functions on unstructured triangular grids. The method is based on the recognition that one may use the number of nonzero entries in the rows of the mass matrix to identify the structure of the mass matrix corresponding to piecewise linear basis functions, and that multigrid for this simpler matrix may be used to construct a multigrid method for the original matrix.
