A series system with two identical and independently operating components subject to stochastic failure is investigated. The probability distribution of the times to failure is assumed to be known, and the equidistant inspection time points are fixed and given. For system maintenance an (n,N)-strategy is to be applied. Accordingly, a component is replaced during an inspection if it has failed during the preceding inspection interval, or if its age (measured in inspection intervals) has reached the value N, or if its age has reached the value n and simultaneously the other component has failed. A formula for the average cost, consisting of break-down cost, replacement cost for one component, and cost for a joint replacement, is derived and an algorithm is stated for determining an optimal (n,N)-policy.
