Motivated from statistical physics in the context of disordered quantum systems, the authors studies certain random band matrices, whose entries are Bernoulli random variables or uniform random variables on the unit circle. It is known that the eigenvalues of these random matrices obey the Wigner semicircle law under the usual macroscopic scaling. However, under other more local scaling (different than the so-called local spectral statistics), which the authors called mesoscopic, they produce certain formulas for the correlation of the eigenvalues. Such formulas are not straight forward to describe, but the authors are able to give some asymptotic expressions which are more amenable. Their proofs are elaborated and make use of some type of graphs called dumbbell skeletons, and at some point the Helffer-Sjöstrand functional calculus is also used.
