Given a field P and an integer \(d>1\), the author constructs (by a variant of the Golod-Shafarevich technique) a 2-generator nil P-algebra having a d-generator infinite-dimensional subalgebra in which all (d-1)-generator subalgebras are nilpotent. Now the case \(P=GF(p)\) gives rise to a ''Golod p-group'' - an infinite d-generator p-group in which all (d-1)-generator subgroups are finite. As a consequence of the main theorem it is deduced that for odd p a Golod p-group can have an infinite subgroup generated by two conjugate elements of order p: this partially answers a question of V. P. Shunkov [6.58 in the Kourovka Notebook (1978; Zbl 0401.20001)].
