This paper investigates the question: ``when is a symplectic manifold Kähler?'' It deals with a special case of Hamiltonian \(G\)-spaces, the so called multiplicity-free \(G\)-spaces. It has been shown by \textit{Th. Delzant} that compact multiplicity-free torus actions are always Kähler [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 116, No. 3, 315-339 (1988; Zbl 0676.58029)]. In this paper, a multiplicity-free action of the non-abelian group \(U(2)\) is constructed that is not Kähler. The example presented here is related to a construction of a Hamiltonian torus action that is not Kähler by \textit{S. Tolman} [Invent. Math. 131, No. 2, 299-310 (1998; Zbl 0901.58018)]. It uses \(U(2)\)-equivariant symplectic surgery on the flag manifold \(U(3)/T\). The proof that the resulting manifold does not admit a compatible Kähler structure uses an X-ray criterion of Tolman (the X-ray is a marked set of singular values of the moment map).
