The author considers a new mechanism for the cancellation of gauge residue symmetries of the heterotic superstring compactification theories. The treatment is based on the trivialization of these symmetries and is generalized by considering the use of obstruction theory. The string vacuum configuration is discussed and the geometrical requirement to avoid destabilization of the string vacuum is studied.
