Let \(L\) be a line bundle on a complex smooth algebraic surface \(X\). Let \(M^{d,L}_X\) be the coarse moduli space parametrizing all rank-2 \(H\)- semistable sheaves \(E\) with \(\text{det} E = L\), \(c_2 (E) = d\) (mod a certain equivalence; \(H\) a very ample line bundle on \(X)\). The first author proved that \(M^{d,L}_X\) is a projective scheme, which for small \(d\) can have a larger dimension than expected. This wild behaviour does not happen anymore for large \(d\) as shown by Donaldson, Friedman and others. In this paper the authors develop a method to study \(M^{d,L}_X\) by degeneration and show the existence of a constant \(A\) such that \(M^{d,L}_X\) is irreducible for \(d > A\).
