In this paper it is studied the \(hp\)--version of the coupling of finite and boundary elements, viewed as a solution procedure for transmission problems in electromagnetics. The coupling method is mainly applied to the eddy current problem. The \(hp\)--refinement can be steered by a threefold adaptive algorithm which allows appropriate increase of polynomial degrees and mesh refinement. This adaptive algorithm is based on \textit{a posteriori} error control by local error estimators of residual type.
