For the numerical solution of one-dimensional hyperbolic systems written in a divergent form, moving adaptive grids are suggested simultaneously refining the time step and the local cell in the domain of definitions where the error exceeds the tolerance. Experiments are conducted on three problems, i.e. transport equations with a constant coefficient, transport equations with a time-dependent coefficient, and a system of equations of polytropic gas dynamics. Calculation for each problem is carried out on a uniform immovable mesh, under local mesh refinement, without mesh moving, on a moving adaptive grid with and without local refinement resulting from the addition of new nodes. Solution profiles are shown as well as node trajectories, time step refinement is plotted as well as computer resource consumption. The conclusion is that the combination of mesh motion and refinement reliability produces solutions for the least cost per unit accuracy.
