An interesting problem with Finsler manifolds is to establish exactly how their geometry differs from that of ``Riemannian'' manifolds. In the last few years the flag curvature has been exploited as a key in classifying the various types of non-Riemannian manifolds. This author has advocated the application of another curvature, called the S-curvature. Here, certain properties of the S-curvature are developed.
