Let \(F\) be a subfield of the complex numbers, let \(H_n(F)\) be the space of all \(n\times n\) symmetric matrices with entries in \(F\), and let \(\chi\) be an irreducible nonlinear character of the symmetric group \(S_n\). The authors characterize the linear operators on \(H_n(F)\) that preserve the immanant \(d_\chi\), where \[ d_\chi(A)=\sum_{\sigma\in S_n}\chi (\sigma) \prod^n_{i=1} a_{i\sigma (i)} \] for \(A=(a_{ij}) \in H_n(F)\).
