    Let \(\text{sinc }x=\prod_{i=1}^ n {{\sin \pi x_ i} \over {\pi x_ i}}\) for \(x=(x_ 1,\dots,x_ n)\in\mathbb{R}^ n\). For a function \(f\) on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) and \(W\geq 0\) let \(I_ W f\) be the sum of the Whittaker cardinal series \[ \sum_{k\in\mathbb{Z}^ n} f\left( {2\pi k \over 2W+1}\right)\text{sinc}\left( {2W+1 \over 2\pi} x-k\right). \] The paper is concerned with the convergence (uniform or in \(L_ p\)) as \(W\to\infty\) of \(I_ Wf\) to \(f\). The principal Theorems 1 and 2 include the results: if \(1<p<\infty\), \(0<q<\infty\) and \(s>n/p\) then the Besov space \(B_{p,q}^ s(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) is the set of functions \(f\in L_ p(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) such that \[ \sum_{W=0}^ \infty \bigl[(W+1)^{s- 1/q}\| f-I_ W f\|_{L_ p}\bigr]^ q<\infty, \] (and a corresponding statement if \(q=\infty\)); and if \(1<p,q<\infty\) and \(s>n/p\) then the Triebel-Lizorkin space \(F_{p,q}^ s(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) is the set of functions \(f\in L_ p(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) such that \[ \|\sum_{W=0}^ \infty \bigl[(W+1)^{s-1/q} | f(x)-I_ W f(x)|\bigr]^ q \|_{L_ p}<\infty. \] Let \(\Phi\) be the set of functions of the form \(\text{sinc}\bigl({2^{j-1} \over \pi}(x-k)\bigr)\) where either \(j=0\) and \(k\in\mathbb{Z}^ n\) or \(j=1,2,\dots\), and \(k\in\mathbb{Z}^ n\) has at least one odd coordinate. Theorem 4 states that if \(1<p<\infty\), \(s>n/p\) and \(0<q<\infty\) (resp. \(1<q<\infty\)) then \(\Phi\) yields unconditional Schauder bases in \(B_{p,q}^ s\) (resp. \(F_{p,q}^ s\)). The results and proofs are closely related to previous work of H. Triebel, H.-J. Schmeisser, the author et al.
