    The authors give a detailed bifurcation analysis of the system \[ \dot x=- ay-by(x^ 2+y^ 2)+2xy-\varepsilon x(x^ 2+y^ 2-\lambda), \] \[ \dot y=ax+bx(x^ 2+y^ 2)+x^ 2-y^ 2-\varepsilon y(x^ 2+y^ 2- \lambda). \] This differential equation can be used to approximate the third iterate of a mapping of \(\mathbb{R}^ 2\) near a Hopf bifurcation point in 3:1 resonance. The analysis concentrates on homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits.
