The book is devoted to the theoretical description of dynamic phenomena associated with discontinuous phase transitions. General concepts of statistical physics are discussed and applied to both equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase transitions. The traditional methods of theoretical physics are combined with Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics computer simulations, mainly for two dimensional systems. Based on a Habilitationsschrift, the book does not intend to give a complete review but rather concentrates on those physical phenomena where the author has made interesting contributions. Yet it serves as a useful introduction to an active and rapidly growing field of research. The book is recommended to graduate students and research workers interested in statistical physics, dynamical systems, and in solid state physics.
