In a recent paper by \textit{D. E. Peek} [Real Anal. Exch. 17, No. 2, 751- 758 (1992; Zbl 0759.26006)] it was shown that the convergence structure of the real line could be characterized by six axioms. In that paper the author asked whether the squeezing axiom, which states that if a sequence of real numbers that is sandwiched between two convergent sequences of real numbers with the same limit then the sequence is convergent, is independent of the other axioms. In this paper, as the title indicates, the answer to this question is given as yes.
