The paper under review considers a Galois cover of Riemann surfaces, \(f : X \rightarrow S\), with Galois group \(G\). The goal of the work is to analyze the \(G\)-invariant divisors on \(X\), and their associated spaces of meromorphic functions, differentials, and \(q\)-differentials. The objective is to generalize Thomae's formulae, which were obtained for fully ramified cyclic covers, to general abelian covers \(X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})\) of the Riemann sphere \(\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})\). In order to get it, a step is finding the non-special \(G\)-invariant divisors of degree \(g_X\) on \(X\). This is obtained in Theorems 4.4 and 4.5 of the paper. Then, in Proposition 6.6 and Theorem 6.7, the authors obtain a generalization of the Eichler Trace Formula and of Chevalley-Weil Formula. Finally, the action of \(G\) on the Jacobian \(J(X)\) of \(X\) is studied, and Theorem 7.4 gives the decomposition of \(J(X)\). A sequel by the authors [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 372, No. 10, 7025--7069 (2019; Zbl 1436.14051)] will follow, in which they apply the results of this paper to state and prove Thomae's formulae for any abelian cover of \( \mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})\).
