Solving elliptic boundary value problems with essential boundary conditions with Galerkin methods leads to saddle point problems. This paper develops a class of multilevel preconditioners for such saddle point problems. These investigations are motivated by the idea of employing nested refinable shift-invariant spaces as trial spaces covering various types of wavelets. General norm equivalences in Sobolev spaces are formulated and proven by the theory of function spaces. The paper shows the practical realization of multilevel preconditioner in terms of wavelets. Finally the results are put in a more general context.
