The author is a known specialist in the theory of PI-algebras. In the present paper he gives the basic concepts of this theory. The reader's attention is concentrated on the famous theorem of \textit{C. Procesi} [Adv. Math. 19, 306-381 (1976; Zbl 0331.15021)] and of \textit{Yu. P. Razmyslov} [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 38, 723-756 (1974; Zbl 0311.16016)] in invariant theory. Furthermore the reader can obtain many ideas and information in the theory of the algebras with polynomial identities.
