When a differential-algebraic equation is to be solved numerically, one usually needs to determine its index. The algorithm of Pantelides is usually employed to resolve this issue, but the authors prefer to use the signature matrix method because in many cases it can provide additional useful structural information. For the special situation where the numerical scheme to be used is the dummy derivative method, it is shown in detail how this additional information can be exploited and which advantages over the approach via the Pantelides method can be achieved in this manner.
