Let \(M\) the set of smooth varieties of dimension \(k\), degree \(d\) in \(\mathbb{P}^ n\), not lying on a proper subspace. Let \(N\subset M\) the set of ``extremal varieties'', i.e. the varieties which have the maximal dimension of \(k\) regular differentials. In a paper by \textit{J. Carlson}, \textit{M. Green}, \textit{P. Griffiths}, and \textit{J. Harris} [Compos. Math. 50, 109-205 (1983; Zbl 0531.14006)], we find the ``strong Torelli conjecture'' which says that the period map is injective on \(N\). The main theorem of the paper under review is that a weaker conjecture is true, in fact that the period map is generically locally injective for \(n\) and \(d\) sufficiently high with respect to \(k\neq 2\) and 3. --- The proof uses the spectral sequences introduced by \textit{M. Green} [J. Differ. Geom. 19, 125-171 (1984; Zbl 0559.14008)].
