The paper deals with the control of linear plants in which the sensor is connected to a linear controller/actuator via a network. It analyzes the effect of reducing the number of data packet exchanges between the sensor and the controller/actuator, and it provides the maximum allowed transfer time between the sensor and the actuator in order that the system be stable. The key idea is to use the knowledge one may have about the plant dynamics to approximate the plant behaviour during the time periods when the sensor is not available. An illustrative artificial example is provided.
