Let G denote a linear, connected, noncompact and semisimple Lie group whose complexification is simply connected, K a maximal compact subgroup and \(\Gamma\subset G\) a discrete, torsionfree subgroup such that \(\Gamma\setminus G\) has finite volume. By application of a theorem of Moscovici the author can prove that for every integral linear form \(\Lambda\in {\mathcal F}_ 0'\) (\({\mathcal F}_ 0'\) defined by a certain behaviour under the Killing form) which satisfies an additional condition concerning the Killing form (- a condition that cannot be weakened -) the multiplicity of the discrete series representation \(\pi_{\Lambda +\delta}\) is given by \[ m_{\pi_{\Lambda +\delta}}(\Gamma)=(- 1)^{\ell (\sigma)} ind_{\Gamma}{\mathcal D}^+_{\Lambda}\quad, \] where \(\ell (\sigma)\) is the length of a uniquely determined Weyl group element \(\sigma\) and \(_{\Gamma}{\mathcal D}^+_{\Lambda}\) the twisted Dirac operator. If \(\pi_{\Lambda +\delta}\) is an integrable discrete series representation then the additional condition concerning the Killing form is always satisfied, but that condition is also satisfied for infinitely many nonintegrable discrete series representations.
