Improving the technique we introduced earlier [cf. Algebraic Geometry, Proc. internat. Conf., La Rabida/Spain 1981, Lect. Notes Math. 961, 169- 188 (1982; Zbl 0255.14011)], we check that the general union of a rational curve and lines in \({\mathbb{P}}^ 3\) is of maximal rank. \{Our result has been extended by \textit{E.
