The author considers a mixed problem for second order hyperbolic equations permitting them to degenerate on the initial surface, and proves the existence and uniqueness theorem for classical solutions: Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded domain in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with smooth boundary \(\partial \Omega =S.\) \[ L[u]=\partial^ 2u/\partial t^ 2-2t^ k\sum^{n}_{j=1}h_ j(t,x)\partial^ 2u/\partial t\partial x_ j- t^{2k}\sum^{n}_{i,j=1}a_{ij}(t,x)\partial^ 2u/\partial x_ i\partial x_ j+a_ 0(t,x)\partial u/\partial t+t^{k- 1}\sum^{n}_{j=1}a_ j(t,x)\partial u/\partial x_ j+d(t,x)u=f(t,x) \] \(u(0,x)=u_ 0(x),\) \(\partial u(0,x)/\partial t=u_ 1(x).\) \[ B[u]|_ S=t^ k(\sqrt{\Sigma a_{ij}(t,s)\nu_ i\gamma_ j}\partial u/\partial \nu +X(t,s)u)-\beta (t,s)\partial u/\partial t+\gamma (t,s)u|_ S=g(t,s). \] For any data \(u_ 0(x),\quad u_ 1(x)\in H^{\infty}(\Omega)\) \(f(t,x)\in {\mathcal C}_ t^{\infty}(H^{\infty}(\Omega)\) and \(g(t,s)\in {\mathcal C}_ t^{\infty}(H^{\infty}(S))\) which satisfy the compatibility condition of infinite order \(((\partial /\partial t)^ rB[u]|_ S|_{t=0}=(\partial /\partial t)^ rg|_{t=0},\) \(r=0,1,2...)\), there is a unique solution u(t,x) of the problem which belongs to \({\mathcal C}_ t^{\infty}(H^{\infty}(\Omega))\).
