This book presents the readers with a basic overview of the rigorous approach to the study of fractional and multivariate calculus in the context of model building and optimization problems. This book covers a broad range of topics that will enable readers to fully understand and create deterministic and nondeterministic models. The book consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the basic essentials of fractional calculus and the properties of Mittag-Leffler and Wright's functions, which are associated with the solutions of fractional-order differential and integral equations. Chapter 2 deals with the fundamentals of multivariable calculus (multivariable functions, limits and continuity, differentiability, directional derivatives and expansions of multivariable functions). Illustrative examples, input-output process, optimal recovery of functions and approximations are well discussed and many exercises are provided for the readers to enhance their clear understanding of the materials presented. Chapter 3 deals with deterministic/mathematical and optimization models evolving from differential equations, algebraic models, computer models, power function models, input-output models and pathway models. Furthermore, optimization of entropy and exponential, Fibonacci sequence and fractional-order integral and derivative models are discussed. Examples of the above models and exercises are included for the readers to fully understand the models. Chapter 4 covers the non-deterministic/stochastic models. The random walk model, branching process model, birth and death process model, time series model and regression-type models are examined and well discussed. A review of fundamentals of statistical distributions are discussed. Optimization of distance measures, minimum mean square prediction and regression analysis on several variables are well presented with exercises to test the comprehension of the readers. Chapter 5 deals with optimal designs in the area of design of experiments and analysis of variance. General linear models from a statistical point of view are introduced. The Gauss-Markov theorem, quadratic forms, and generalized inverses of matrices are well discussed. Many illustrative problems were solved and and generous exercises are included for the readers. Finally, the last chapter, which is Chapter 6, covers the pathway, symmetric and asymmetric models. Exercises were included for the readers which will require the use of MAPLE or MATEMATICA or any other mathematical word processor with graphic facilities to draw the graphs of some of these models. This interesting book is well presented and would be very useful for researchers and graduate students working in several areas including mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, finance and even social sciences.
