The main purpose of this very well written paper is to show how one can use Jacobi's theorem on the minors of the inverse matrix to provide direct and elementary proofs of the Borodin--Okounkov formula [\textit{A.\,Borodin} and \textit{A.\,Okounkov}, Integral Equations Oper.\ Theory 37, 386--396 (2000; Zbl 0970.47014)] and the strong Szegő limit theorem [\textit{G.\,Szegő}, Meddel.\ Lunds Univ.\ Mat.\ Sem.\ Suppl.-band M.\,Riesz, 228--238 (1952; Zbl 0048.04203)], and also to derive exact and asymptotic formulas for Toeplitz determinants generated by functions with nonzero winding number.
