Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete subgroup of $\text{SU}_3$, acting in the standard way on $\mathbb{C}^3$. This long paper is devoted to illustrate the following fact: the algorithm a la Kronheimer for the constructions of crepant resolutions $\mathcal{M}_\zeta $ of the singular variety $\mathbb{C}^3/\Gamma$ gives exhaustive information about (a) the field content and (b) the interaction structure of the superconformal $D = 3$, $\mathcal N = 2$ Chern-Simons gauge theory, which are dual to the $M2$-brane solutions of $D = 11$ supergravity with transverse spaces of the form $\mathbb{C} \times \mathcal{M}_\zeta$. \par After a quick overview of the general structure of the $D = 3$, $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Chern-Simons gauge theories dual to $M2$-branes, the authors review some crucial features of such theories in the cases in which the $M2$-branes are transverse to spaces of the form $\mathbb{C}^2 \times \mathcal{M}'_\zeta$ where $\mathcal{M}'_\zeta$ is a crepant resolution of a singular variety $\mathbb{C}^2/\Gamma'$ for some discrete subgroup $\Gamma'$ of $\text{SU}_2$. Inspired and guided by what occurs in such cases, the authors proceed in considering discrete subgroups $\Gamma$ of $\text{SU}_3$, the corresponding constructions a la Kronheimer of crepant resolutions $\mathcal{M}_\zeta$ of the quotients $\mathbb{C}^3/\Gamma$ and the consequences concerning the Chern-Simons gauge theories that are dual to $M2$-branes with transverse spaces $\mathbb{C} \times \mathcal{M}_\zeta$. \par The exposition is surely not systematic. In fact the authors do their best to avoid as much as possible inexpressive and not intuitive definitions or theorems. In their place, by means of several explicit computations, they give a number of examples of how fruitful is the considered generalised Kronheimer construction in providing important information.
