Residual scaling techniques (coarse-grid correction optimization techniques) in multigrid methods are considered. The equivalence of the overweighted residual technique and the overcorrection technique is shown. This leads to the proof of mathematical equivalence of the prescaling and postscaling acceleration techniques. The result is helpful in developing efficient prescaling acceleration techniques for practical applications. Practical applications are presented in part II [ibid. 90, No. 2-3, 229-252 (1998; reviewed below)].
