Die Gleichung \[ f(x,\; y)=ax^4+4bx^3y+6cx^2y^2+4dxy^3+ey^4 \] kann bei beliebigem \(u\) durch \(x^2=z_1,\; 2xy=z_2,\; y^2=z_3\) in \[ F(z_1,\; z_2,\; z_3)=az_1^2+2bz_1z_2+2(c+2u)z_1z_3+(c-u)z_2^2+2dz_2z_3+ez_3^2 \] \[ =A(z_1+mz_2+nz_3)^2+B(z_2+pz_3)^2+Cz_3^2 \] transformirt werden. Damit dies die Summe zweier Quadrate werde, muss \(A.\; B.\; C\), die Determinante von \(F\), verschwinden. So erhält man die Ferrari'sche Resultante in der Aronhold'schen Form \[ \varDelta=\begin{vmatrix}\l\quad &\l\quad &\l\quad \\ a & b & c+2u\\ b & c-u & d \\ c+2u & d & e \end{vmatrix} =0. \]
