Let \(G\) be a periodic group whose set of element orders is precisely \(\{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7\}\). For example \(G\) could be \(\mathrm{Alt}(7)\). It has been known for some 30 years (and due to \textit{R. Brandl} and \textit{W. Shi} [J. Algebra 143, No. 2, 388--400 (1991; Zbl 0745.20022)]) that if \(G\) is also finite, then \(G\) is isomorphic to \(\mathrm{Alt}(7)\). The speculation is, of course, that the same is true in general. Here, the authors prove that \(G\) has a simple subgroup isomorphic to \(\mathrm{Alt}(5)\) or \(\mathrm{PSL}(2, 7)\). The authors plan to complete the analysis of \(G\) in a later paper. For Part I see [the first author, Sib. Math. J. 61, No. 1, 109--117 (2020; Zbl 1460.20007); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 61, No. 1, 137--147 (2020)].
