The author surveys some of the more important theory associated with the formulae in the well-known backward differentiation formulae (BDF) and in the modified extended backward differentiation formulae (MEBDF) for solving stiff initial value problems numerically. By considering the solution of damped oscillatory problems, the author discusses some of the practical applications. He also describes some significant recent extensions to the applicability of MEBDF codes.
