Using the Cauchy stress for a primary deformation and the corresponding stress for an infinitesimal superposed deformation, the authors investigate the title boundary value problem by means of Euler's stability criterion. In the cylindrical coordinate system, they derive the physical components of deformation and stresses together with the incremental equilibrium equations and boundary conditions. The unknown functions with trigonometric terms including axial and angular variables are found by using this technique, whereas the unknown functions dependent upon the radial variable are determined as sums of modified Bessel functions of first and second kind. The arguments of the Bessel functions are roots of a characteristic equation. The resulting stability condition is expressed by the vanishing of a \(6\times 6\) determinant which relates the longitudinal critical stretch to the slenderness measure. The characteristic equation is analysed for Mooney-Rivlin and Gent-Thomas materials. The results are plotted in diagrams with asymmetric, axisymmetric, asymptotic and delimiting lines with relevant conclusions for each case.
