The authors present two adaptive quadrature rules. One is the adaptive Simpson rule with an improved termination criterion. The second is based on a four-point Gauss-Lobatto formula with Kronrod extensions. Matlab programs are included. In a series of test calculations these programs perform very well compared with routines included in the software libraries IMSL, NAG and Matlab. Attention is drawn to serious deficiencies in the Matlab routines quad and quad8.
