This paper reviews some of the well-known difficulties in applying canonical quantization techniques to the standard Einstein form of general relativity. These problems arise from the general covariance of the theory and a lack of preferred time-like slicings of space-time. One well-known technique for avoiding these problems involves the introduction of coordinate conditions into the theory. The author proposes his version of this approach in terms of a non-generally covariant modification of the Einstein Lagrangian.
