The paper is devoted to some aspects characterizing complete symmetry groups of a differential equation, a notion introduced by \textit{J. Krause} [J. Math. Phys. 35, No. 11, 5734-5748 (1994; Zbl 0816.70006)]. The algebras of symmetry for both differential equations and first integrals are studied in the context of equations for which the elements are represented by point or contact symmetries. Both algebras and groups are found to be nonunique.
