An s-representation is the isotropy representation of a semisimple symmetric space, which is always a polar representation. Polar representations were classified by \textit{J. Dadok} and \textit{V. Kac} [J. Algebra 92, 504--524 (1985; Zbl 0611.22009)]. They have nice geometric and invariant theory properties. Orbits of s-representations are important in submanifold geometry. For example, they are characterized by a rank condition in the rank rigidity theorem for submanifolds (Theorem 1.1). This paper concerns a conjecture which charaterizes orbits of s-representations by properties of normal holonomy (Conjecture p. 468). The authors show a result along the direction of this conjecture in Theorem 1.3, which is the main result of this paper. They emphasized the use of a traceless shape operator, instead of the previously used shape operator.
