In a previous paper [Shape-preserving interpolation by parametrically defined curves, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 25, No.6, 1453-1465 (1988)] the authors discussed criteria for planar curves interpolation which preserve local convexity (i.e. the curve has the minimum number of inflection points compatible with the data) and local monotonicity. With a similar approach, in this paper an interpolation scheme is obtained by patching together parametric cubic segments and straight lines. In addition the method has: second order geometric continuity, it is appropriated both for open and closed curves and it allows local modifications by the user. To generate the cubic curve segments two nonlinear equations in two unknowns must be solved. An implementation of the method and some numerical experiments are included.
