The authors discuss the question as to which Banach spaces admit a shift operator. They show that if a compact Hausdorff space \(X\) is not separable and has no isolated points then the Banach space \(C(x)\) does not admit an isometric shift. They also discuss shift operators on Dedekind complete Banach lattices, and establish that these spaces do not admit a disjointness preserving quasi-shift operator if the spaces do not have any atoms. It is established that if an \(L^ p\) space \((1< p\leq \infty)\) admits a disjointness preserving shift then it must be isometrically isomorphic to the sequence space \(\ell^ p\).
