A module-finite algebra over a commutative Noetherian local ring \(R\) is said to be Cohen-Macaulay if it is such as \(R\)-module. The author here presents a notion of Cohen-Macaulayness for left Noetherian semilocal rings that is independent of any commutative ground ring. The rôle normally played by sequences of elements is taken over by sequences of invertible ideals. The notion of Cohen-Macaulay module is developed, along with an appropriate dimension theory. A form of regularity due to Auslander is discussed, and some examples are given.
