Let \(H=-{1 \over 2}\Delta+V\) be a Schrödinger operator on \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) (\(N\geq 3\)), where \(V\) is a nonnegative potential in \(L^ 1_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^ N)\), and let \(\{S(t):t\geq0\}\) be the semigroup generated by \(-H\) on \(L^ p(\mathbb{R}^ N)\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\). It is shown that \(\| S(t)f\|_ 1\to0\) as \(t\to\infty\) for all \(f\in L^ 1(\mathbb{R}^ N)\) if and only if \(\int_ \Omega V(x)| x|^{2- N}dx=\infty\) for all the open subsets \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) whose complements are transient for Brownian motion (equivalently, those \(\Omega\) for which the Dirichlet problem has non-unique bounded solutions). Moreover, \(\| S(t)\|_{L^ p}\to0\) if and only if \(\int_ \Omega V(x)dx=\infty\) for all those \(\Omega\) for which Poincaré's inequality fails.
