The dynamic buckling of viscoelastic plates with large deflections is investigated by using chaos and fractal theories. The material behaviour is described by Boltzmann superposition principle. In order to obtain accurate computation results, the authors reduce the governing nonlinear integro-differential dynamic equation to an autonomous four-dimensional dynamical system. Numerical time integrations of the equations are performed by using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The authors obtain Lyapunov exponent spectrum, fractal dimension of strange attractors, and time evolution of plate deflections. Additionally, the authors discuss the influence of geometric nonlinearities and viscoelastic parameters on the dynamic bucking of viscoelastic plates.
