The authors study a fluid queueing model in which the flow rates of fluid into and out of the buffer are governed by a birth-death process with a finite state space. The equilibrium distribution of the buffer content can be expressed in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a tridiagonal matrix. Efficient numerical procedures are provided for computing these quantities.
