The authors extend recent results of the reviewer, \textit{Y. P. Lin} and \textit{S. H. Zhang} [J. Integral Equations Appl. 10, No. 4, 375-396 (1998; Zbl 0944.65140)] on asymptotic expansions of iterated Galerkin methods for one-dimensional Volterra integral equations to analogous (linear) equations in two dimensions. They show that when piecewise polynomials \(\pi_{p-1, q-1}\) (\(p\geq 1\), \(q\geq 1\)) are used, the iterated Galerkin solution admits an asymptotic error expansion in powers of the two stepsizes \(h\) and \(k\), beginning with terms in \(h^{2p}\) and \(k^{2q}\). This justifies the use of postprocessing methods based on Richardson extrapolation techniques. Two examples (including a nonlinear problem) are used to illustrate the theoretical results.
